Afternoon Snooze

A stop of positive exposure compensation was used to lift the shadows of this snoozing king penguin. The camera had to be braced against a handrail as the shutter speed was a mere 1/50 second at ISO3200. Lighting was pretty dim in the air-conditioned penguin pen.

The fragrance of the flowers drew us to the tree. The backdrop was actually shady foliage, so 1-1/3 stops of negative exposure compensation was good enough to get this low-key effect. Greens and yellows were toned down a little in post.

In foul Mood

These African dogs were housed on elevated ground and so we could easily photograph them at their eye level. This would somehow make for a more engaging view.

This corner here was pretty dark. At ISO3200, I was only getting a 1/40-second shutter speed. Thankfully, there wasn’t any camera shake even at actual size.

Against a dark undergrowth, 1-2/3 stops of negative exposure compensation here were enough to clean up distracting elements in the background and get this low-key image.

This was captured when the gibbon had come down and had its back against dark undergrowth. If it had been higher up in the trees, it would’ve the bright sky at its back and I was afraid that that might impact contrast and details to some extent.

Chinatown In A Pandemic

It was night and it was soon after the end of the lock-down and some folks were out taking a breather just like us.

This was underexposed by a conservative 2/3 stop and the image ended up with some small areas of highlights clipping. If I were to do this again, I would give it at least a stop or two to expose for the highlights and then re-adjust the shadows and mid-tones in post.

Peace Talk In The Park

Lighting was pretty dim around this spot pushing up the ISO to 1000 despite my underexposing by 1-1/3 stops. Anyway, I thought the X-Trans sensor image quality at this ISO was still quite decent.
